The path below a tall evergreen tree was littered with small strawberry-like fruits and on the tree there were many cream, orange and red berries together with tiny bell-like white flowers.   The flowers will take a year to ripen into fruit so the berries are last year’s flowers.  The fruit is edible but was not very tasty and the skin was a bit rough although birds love it.  It grows wild around the Mediterranean and in Portugal the berries are used to make jam and a traditional liqueur called medronho.
