Lugar Water

We stayed overnight in the pleasant little Ayrshire town of Mauchline, which has much to offer if you are interested in the life and times of the famous Scottish Poet, Rabbie Burns.  It was the birthplace of Jean Armour, his wife and it was where they started their married life, in a small cottage that is now an excellent museum (see extra).

We spent the morning in Mauchline and then drove a few miles south to the conservation village of Ochiltree, one of the oldest in East Ayrshire.  The above is the Lugar Water which flows through the village from east to west.  At this point, it is joined by the Burnock Water and its waters are harnessed by a weir which drove the local grain mills in days gone by.  

Apparently Atlantic salmon can be seen jumping the fish ladder, which allows them to reach their spawning grounds in the upper reaches of the river ...................
