George Canning

Another of the statues in Parliament Square.

I can't find much interesting to say about George Canning. He was only Prime Minister for a short time before he died.

Sidney Smith said of George Canning that he was like a fly in amber. "No-one cares about the fly. The question is, how did it get there?"

I see what he meant.

But the statue is a good one -- maybe it's the toga.

A few weeks ago I blipped Abraham Lincoln. He's still my favourite -- and there's a funny story about the statue that got away ...
