Our changing world
Met Molly the collie while out walking. It's sometime since I have seen her and her owner, so we had a lot of catching up to do.
This morning though was our weekly dance class, and we had a substitute dance artist, a young Italian dancer who brought her year-old toddler with her. To everyone’s amazement instead of the expected mayhem of having a toddler scrabbling around on the dance floor he was perfectly at home. When he got bored his mother simply picked him up and carried on the lesson dancing with him tucked under one arm.
Only later over coffee did she reveal how she juggles her life with a part time job in Dundee, a lectureship in Glasgow, teaching in two cities and studying for a MA. All this with two children under five years of age.
Meanwhile her husband works 50 hours a week to make ends meet.
We left, shaking our heads. How on earth do young people manage these days?
Not for the first time did we say that those of us belonging to the Baby Boomer generation had the best of times.
