Hamburger pottery

My cousin, analogconvert13 and I have once again discovered that we own pottery items from the same factory.

This collection is from a pottery in Grahamstown, South Africa, an organisation taking advantage of the rich clay deposits in the area.

Jurgen Hamburger fled Germany in the early part of WW 11 and ended up in this small city in the Eastern Cape area of SA. where I lived for a few years with my parents and while at university.

His distinctive designs and glazes are instantly recognisable.

The incised stamp on the bottom is a stylised G (for Grahamstown) and H (for Hamburger.

The pottery changed hands over time and finally closed in 1985.

Today, Grahamstown has been renamed Makhanda rending the researchers of the future an even more difficult task with the famous GH mark.
