dictionary day 12a: vernacular

(12a = i'm superstitious :-) )

vernacular n & adj n 1 the language or dialect of a particular country 2 the language of a particular clan or group 3 homely speech adj 1 (of language) of one's native country, not of foreign origin or of learned formation. 2 (of architecture) concerned with ordinary rather than monumental buildings.

in the vernacular of edinburgh, this is not an alley, but a close.

edinburgh's old town vernacular architecture includes closes.

two birds, one stone...

off to bake cake (ginger marmalade slice) and bemoan the fact it's a newsy night and thus a silent one.

i hand over to pocho on the dictionary project tomorrow (acc to the forum list, anyway), so if you've been following the project it's time to check out another blipper.

it's been interesting - it's both liberating and constraining to spend the day thinking of how to illustrate a specific word, tho several of mine have come fairly easily. something useful to consider if you're sick of posting shots from the same route to work or whatever tho. hope you've enjoyed them.
