Merlin and I ventured out for a walk first thing this morning. I found these tiny fungi nestled in the crevice of a tree trunk which lies in one corner of the meadow. Sheltered from the worst of the weather they seem to have all they need there to thrive.

I sometimes wonder how the trunk came to be there. Perhaps it was a lightening strike or a disease which killed the tree. There are several large limbs of the tree as well as the trunk.

It’s quite a focal point for activity. Children enjoy climbing on it, walkers rest sitting on it, sometimes people picnic there. There are many times I’ve been grateful for being able to rest on it and watch the world go by - a kestrel hunting over head or buzzards circling in the sky.

Later it was dry enough to manage a few hours at the allotment. Today’s task was to weed the asparagus bed and then put down a layer of manure. It was quite tiring work and I returned feeling in need of a sit down. Once refreshed with a cup of tea and rock cake I took Merlin out for his afternoon walk.

Grateful for:
- The ability to get outside and find joy in a grey November day.
- Merlin’s willingness to go for an afternoon walk in the pouring rain.
- The smell of rice pudding baking in the oven when I returned home wet and in the dark.
