These late poppies reminded me of the poppies which have become symbolic of those who have died since WW1 in conflicts and wars and are remembered on Armistice Day today. The dead leaves remind me too of those who continue to die in countries due to ongoing conflicts.
This evening we watched online a very good celebration from Chicago of the life of G. We had known him and his wife for over 40 years and had hosted their children and three of their grandchildren several times over the years so it was good to see them all on screen paying tribute to their parents and grandparents. His wife had a very low key funeral three years ago due to covid restrictions so in a way it was also a tribute to her. Their son had made an excellent video which included a photo of G with S and mentioned the influence that S had made on him over the years. It was very moving but made me think of all those who have died “in poppy fields” who had no funeral and very little acknowledgement of their lives apart perhaps by being recorded as an unknown soldier or a name on a war memorial and only living in the memories of their loved ones. Unfortunately there seems little prospect of the end to war.
