Diary of an Edinburgher

By LadyMarchmont

Say cheese!

Today we should have been puffin hunting. But on Thursday evening we watched the weekend weather, and they predicted rain and high winds for Saturday. It was the high winds which caused concern - feeling seasick on a wee boat for an hour and half (each way) did not really appeal - even with added puffins.

And so we postponed the excursion till next weekend. This guarantees, of course, that today's weather was glorious, and next weekend there will be storms!

JR went into town in the morning, and we were to meet up later to try out a new (to us) hostelry and go to the early evening movies. Well, I got a frantic phone call to say that there were birds of prey outside John Lewis!! This is like saying they were giving away free Magnums! No - it's better than that!! I've always wanted to get close to BoPs. So I hot footed it down town. Jings! Those bus drivers can go slowly sometimes.

And the crowds of dawdling tourists and folk with dozens of Primark bags - I nearly pushed a few out of my way in my haste. But the BoPs were still there! Eight of them, all different. But the biggest was Edward, and Eagle Owl. People could pose with them, which was fun to watch, but they mainly chose the wee cute ones. Edward sat positively sulking on his perch. He did NOT want to be there.

Eventually a woman decided she wanted Edward to pose with her. Would he look the right direction? No he would not. He steadfastly kept his head turned away to the left. His handler kept trying to make him look towards the camera, and he'd try to bite the handler's fingers. He eventually briefly looked at the camera and the bloke got his photo, and so did I! Edward is FUMING! LOL.

We then popped into a fabby pub - used to be a Post Office, and the decor is terrific. The muzak was loud, but not screechy, and a very good sound system. The service was good. Excellent nibbles menu, and we had a sweet young chap waiting on us. I asked where he was from - I couldn't pick any accent. Wales!! Never had a Welsh waiter before. And I managed to tell the people at the next table that I was going to Tanzania, and to show them my new camera.

Went to see Liberace. It was excellent. The two leads were terrific, and they must have had fun making it.

What a good day. Better than puffin hunting, actually.
