Fungal

An interlude in the persistent showers this afternoon allowed us to enjoy a short walk around Risley Moss.

We came across this mass of fungi, which I think is Honey Fungus. If correct, it’s bad news for the tree alongside which it is fruiting, as it is a tree and shrub killer. The genus to which it belongs includes a fungi extending over 3.4 sq miles in a forest in Oregon, the largest known single organism on Earth and estimated to be 2500 years old.
