Skeldergate Bridge, York
It was a lovely morning for a cycle ride into York. And as the sun was still shining at lunchtime, I had a walk along the river looking for an autumnal blip. The river is back between the banks but has left a lot of mud on the footpaths. My boots now need a clean!
The bridge was built in 1881. The small arch at the east end (on the right of the image) had an opening portion, powered by machinery in the Motor House, which also served as a toll house and accommodation for the toll keeper and his family. You learn a lot from Wikipedia! I never knew this bridge even opened. Apparently, it was last opened in 1975 but will never open again as the machinery has now been removed. The toll house is now a lovely little cafe.
