Putting Food By

This little spider is wrapping up a snack to enjoy later on.  It reminded me of the old phrase, "putting food by".  Fall was the time for canning and storing root vegetables for the long winter months.  My grandmother made jams and jellies and canned green beans and corn before we got a freezer.  Grandpa would store carrots in boxes of sand and braid onions to hang in the cellar.  She would also make her famous bread and butter pickles which always appeared on our Thanksgiving table each November.  They were called "Give me some more" pickles.  I've included the recipe in her own hand in the extras.  I still make those and they are delicious and so easy to make.  Gift#308: delicious memories.
