What Keeps the Planet Spinning
Okay - So THIS is the reason for the traffic cones which appeared on Wednesday morning.
You drive into our estate, and you have to drive through. The only other road which went out of the estate was closed years ago, so stop the through traffic from the Golf Course through this residential area.
Between us and the Golf Course, are two railway lines. The Main Glasgow to Ayr line, and a smaller, less used Kilmarnock to Ayr line. You might remember last year I was incredibly amused when a van ran into the main line bridge. So that side has been repaired, but I have no idea when the Kilmarnock line was ever repaired.
I don't even know how long it has been there; it might have been there 100 years. Coal used to be brought from Kilmarnock down to the harbour (I might be talking total shit), but there were lines which went to the harbour - even in my time.
I do know though, that when I walk under the Kilmarnock line I look up and I think... oh heavens, I can see the sky.
So this weekend they are replacing it. They have been preparing for the move for a couple of weeks, and this week, the cones went down to facilitate the movement of heavy machinery into the estate. This crane arrived about 8 last night. Tooli and I stood, open mouthed as it dragged itself around the corner... it was so massive, we couldn't even see where the driver was positioned.
At 10 pm last night, floodlights went on, bus loads of workers disembarked and the work began. The second shift arrived at 7.30 this morning and last night's lot went home.
The new bridge is sitting on the edge of the playing field, and there are vans, smaller cranes, lorries and concrete carriers parked everywhere. Let me tell you, if one of these lorries comes round the corner, and any of the cars are parked where they were the other night, they won't even feel them as they drive over the top of them.
The Crane has "elbows" to either side - I've not taken this from the best angle, but the fact that it has these massive elbows to strengthen it's hoist tells me that it is carrying some heavy duty stuff around.
It's towering above me outside the window and I can slowly see it moving ... but I'm not going too close.
I've always been a bit scared of cranes... and diggers... I think at nighttime, they come alive... like "Night in the Museum.
