A tick on the bucket list
I am still playing catch-up with Blip after two days away followed by a busy weekend, so this blip is from Friday 3rd November when we were in Glasgow.
Ever since seeing it featured in many episodes of the Scottish TV Detective series “Taggart” in the 1980s and 90s, I have wanted to visit the Glasgow Necropolis, and today I fulfilled that ambition. The Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery on a low but prominent hill near Glasgow Cathedral, giving good views across some areas of the city. It was opened in April 1833 and 50,000 individuals are buried here, many of them merchants, industrialists, poets, writers, ship builders and soldiers. Many of the graves are unmarked but there are around 3500 monuments, some of them very grand, placed here by wealthy Victorians. Apart from us, there were quite a few people strolling around and Nick decided to practise his best Taggart impersonation (“Thurrs bin a murrrder!”) on a couple we encountered. Sadly, they didn’t know what he was talking about and I had to explain.
All appointments successfully met, we had an enjoyable journey home in the autumn sunshine, giving us some beautiful views. Thankfully, Bertie wasn’t sick this time as we travelled a different route.
