Metro

The Moscow Metro is impressive - a lot of the metro stations are like museums, the system transports more people every day than the underground in London and the subway in New York combined and the trains run with an almost scary punctuality.

The metro opened in 1935 with one line and 13 stations, it was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union. Today the Moscow Metro has 188 stations and its route length is 312.9 km. The Moscow Metro is the world's third most heavily used rapid transit system after Tokyo subway and Seoul Metropolitan Subway.

As stated above some of the stations are fabulous but I wanted to try and convey here a little bit of the feeling that the ordinary person has when using the metro system day in day out. The hustle and bustle, the dim lighting, the queueing for the long journey down on the escalator to the station where there are people hanging around, listening to music on their headphones, reading books and magazines, leaning against the thick solid pillars, glancing up at the digital clocks at the end of each platform telling them the time and the numbers of minutes and seconds since the last train.
