Cheap beer
An inside blip today, as we are being buffeted by Storm Babet, although not as badly as further up the coast where there is a red weather warning in place.
Today’s blip is of the David MacBeth Moir pub in the North High Street in Musselburgh.
Originally built as the Hayweights Cinema in 1924 with a seating capacity of 800 seats. It was independently operated by Mr. P. Di Rollo. Around 1929 it was equipped with a British Thomson Houston (BTH) sound system. The cinema was enlarged in the mid-1930’s to 1,050 seats.
The cinema was closed in the late-1960’s and was converted into a bingo club, which operated for many years.
The building was then purchased by the J.D. Wetherspoon chain of pubs and converted into a pub known as the David MacBeth Moir, which opened on 14th February 2012.
As with many Weatherspoons pubs, it has been sympathetically restored to reflect its art deco heritage.
Currently, the pubs claim to fame is that it sells the cheapest beer of any Wetherspoons pub in the UK, £2.65 per pint.
For your info, David Macbeth Moir was a physician and author, born in the town in 1798. Turns out he was a great friend of Charles Darwin, who contributed to a fund to built a memorial in the town, after his passing.
Have a good day all, and stay safe.
