Awesome Sky

This is what we saw of the Solar Eclipse this morning.

In the evening, we went to the Symphony which was a mix of great music. Leonard Slatkin was guest conductor. I’d never seen him before, and it turns out he’s my age, an LA Hollywood kid, his parents played music for the movies (his mother played the rumbling two-note opening notes to JAWS. The guest cellist played an encore of L. Cohen’s Hallelujah, he played and sang, then invited the audience to sing along; it was moving and beautiful. The second half was a modern piece with a million percussion instruments. My binocs were working overtime. The timpanist used 18 drums. Slatkin played an encore too, or rather the orchestra did. A raucous and wonderful hoedown sort of number that his father had arranged.
