Customer Service

A lesson in poor customer service at lunchtime today. TL;DR - don't slag off the subject put before you, and layer on the suggestion that you don't have to worry about doing a decent job...

Popped to a local paint shop (just ten minutes away, despite us living in the middle of nowhere! Extras pic from the return trip) to get a quote for painting the new door step panels, and y’know when you really don’t get a good vibe from a place?

First couple of people I spoke to were fine, but the guy who would be doing the paint came out and declared. “Ah’m no being funny, but I presume you’re not really bothered about it if you’re just wanting it painted?” I explained that the corroded A panel, as well as the scuttle and probably wings, are next in the list, but that’s likely next year.

He then said that he had a colour in mind, and it wasn’t a difficult job because the, “colour’s no exactly the same all the way round is it.”

The more I thought about it on the way home, the more it bugged me. They had a shop full of big SUVs and Boy Racer type machines. Clearly people who can throw everything at this because either they simply have the cash, or it’s the main thing in their life (or insurance companies are covering the bill).

For me this car is a pure indulgence. I have it because I absolutely love it, but it makes no financial sense at all (isn't that always the case with the most fun things in life?). We’re setting up a smallholding, with money needed for a myriad of things way higher in the priority list. Recently I’ve even been considering having to sell the car to fund other ‘stuff’. But at the moment he’s still here, and I’m doing things piecemeal as and when I can raise the funds (the welding was paid for by selling a load of old bike stuff for a build that had to be shelved).

So he can sod off with the attitude (bad customer service like this doesn’t usually bug me, but this has struck a nerve). Way more awkward to get to now, but I think I’ll get back in touch with the lovely one-man-band guy in Musselburgh who did a wheel arch for me about 5 years ago.
