Present Peace
Looked very peaceful when we took our visitor to have a look, and to take some of our orange juice to a friend (whose house you can see in the photo).
But this place has seen a lot of violence. The Romans, recurring wars with Spain, which you can see on the other side of the Lake, and with the Moors - Monsaraz was first taken from them in 1167, and then again in 1232. Not to mention the Inquisition, when several residents of the town taken to Évora to be burnt at the stake. And lastly, Salazar's dictatorship, which saw this region as a hotbed of communism.
But today, peace. Long may it last.
Gratefuls:
- feeling better, and getting some good sleep in
- Sharon being an easy guest, who is also enjoying some down time, I think
- the smell of Mike's bread, which we will eat in a bit, with avocado, I hope
