The photos of Glasgow streets and lanes were 'better' but I can take them any time I'm over. As for Baxter...
Back home mid-morning from the overnighter at work and pretty much straight out for the noon screening of Went The Day Well at The Cameo - part of their mini Ealing season.
Then after a quick coffee and cake stop it was off to The West on a packed 15.04 from Haymarket. We took in the new show at GOMA, meandered our way to the west end - drinks on Great Western Road and Ashton Lane - and got to QMU for the support, a hugely enjoyable rap/ drum and bass set from Oneda. Followed by the main man, Baxter Dury. Just great. He spent as much time prowling the stage, throwing shapes, swinging the mic stand around and mucking around with his suit jacket as he did singing - longtime collaborator/band member Madelaine Hart being there to keep it all together. I read somewhere that she provides the sweetness to his bluntness and that without her the songs would be half as good, and I'd go along with that.
A great set covering everything right across his back catalogue, and then a euphoric encore to close.
And an added bonus - the 11 o'clock train home rather than the last one! First time ever.
