I replaced the front gear shifter on a bike today to rectify a persistent fault. In years gone by I'd have used pliers, side-cutters, or whatever else I could find to cut the gear wire to length and then swear loudly at the frayed mess that was often the result. Eventually, I shelled out for the proper tool for the job and, although it doesn't get a lot of use, it was well worth the money.
