In the undergrowth

Seems to be hunders of small brown snails occupying the lower parts of this fennel. There were some on the green fresh parts but mostly they were gorging themselves on the rotting stalks from last years growth.

It was tricky not to stand on them whilst taking pictures, an act which resulted in a sickly squelching crunch.
