Hyde Park Barracks

Today, we went our separate ways, we've been stuck together for a month now, so a few hours alone was perfect. Himself went to the Sydney Cricket Ground and I went to Paddington (Paddo) market. Both are thoroughly enjoyable.

Afterwards, we visited the Hyde Park Barracks. Most streets and areas in Sydney are named after British towns and villages. The Barracks gave an insight into the life of a convict back in the 1800's. It was very well put together with an audio guide that came on as you approached the displays. The story was told by convicts or by Irish women who had come over during the potato famine. This image tells why people were shipped off. Can you see that a 17 year old was convicted of stealing a handkerchief? Thrown on a boat, and ten weeks later he finds himself so far away from everything and everyone he knows. That seems harsh.

Time to pack up again tonight, but not before we took a night ferry from Darling Harbour round to Circular Quay. These ferries are not cruises you book, but normal everyday local transport. The city, the bridge, and the Opera House all lit up was the perfect end to this leg of the trip.

Sydney has been fabulous, we could easily spend more time here.
