Patience...
I have already posted this species this year, but couldn't resist this look at a mature adult Jagged Ambush Bug (Phymata species). I was lucky to come across one that was molting a few months ago - click HERE - it wasn't yet an adult so did not have functional wings. This beauty has clearly visible wings. These insects are quite small and vary in color. There is some evidence that they are able to change colors based on their habitat although this hasn't been definitely proven. I found it interesting that this one is very white compared to the ones I've found on goldenrod which tend to be yellower.
Ambush bugs are part of the Assassin Bug family and their hunting technique is to simply wait until something gets close enough to grab. They typically prey on small pollinators (flies, bees, wasps). They have claw-like forearms (somewhat similar to mantids) that they use for grabbing their prey. And that concludes today's science class!
I've been fairly productive today while still managing some quality time in the garden. It was supposed to rain today, but not a drop has fallen yet. And it's still been very warm which is about to come to an abrupt stop. Zoom yoga this morning which is always really enjoyable (and good for me). Pain level is very low today for reasons I can't fathom but will happily take!
Dark with dried cherries and almonds today, one of the faves.
