Date line

With apologies for the poor image, visibility not good. These are the Diomede Islands in the Bering Strait. The left hand, more westerly, smaller island is Little Diomede in the USA. The right hand, more easterly, bigger island is Big Diomede in Russia. The border and the date line run half way through the 2.4 mile strait that separates them. LD is in today, BD is in tomorrow. We are sailing west of LD and staying firmly in today (and USA).

I always wanted to visit Russia but I will probably never get closer than this. We originally booked to sail the North East Passage from Tromso to Nome, instead of the North West Passage from Reykjavik to Nome. Either way we will be in Nome tomorrow!
