The Wine Tower

This enigmatic stone tower stands close to Kinnaird Head Lighthouse, there is uncertainty as to its exact function - perhaps a wine cellar for the Laird of Philorth whose seat was in Kinnaird Castle but more probably a secret Chapel used by his Catholic wife.
According to legend in the late 1500s century a daughter of the 8th Laird enraged her father by forming a relationship with a lowly piper. The piper was imprisoned by the Laird's in a room at the bottom of the tower which flooded at high tide. On hearing that her lover had been drowned the Laird's daughter who was imprisoned on the upper storey threw herself from the roof of the tower and was killed on the rocks below.

The legend is kept alive by the splash of red paint marking the place where she met her end.
