Grey Dagger caterpillar

I had never seen this caterpillar before, it is surprising how different things  continue to show themselves in the garden if one really looks!  Its Latin name is acronicta psi.  The adult moth has grey wings with bold black dagger-shaped markings.  Here the caterpillar seems to be spinning to make a cocoon perhaps?
