Lewes

We are in East Sussex for a few days, we’ve had a long but good journey down getting warmer and warmer as we 
travelled. 

On arrival we went straight into town and found a car park next to a place called Needleworks. Sounded just up my street but although it was an interesting old building it was really just a collection of shops. Still we got a cup of tea and shared a piece of Kentish apple cake before exploring the High Street. 

Some very nice buildings but lots of empty shops sadly, three in a row in one place. At the end of the street, looking into the sun, we could see two towers. The bell tower and slightly crooked spire of St Michael’s Church.  The lovely flint walls were sparkling in the sun but St Michael himself, adorning the tower, was in the shade. It has been a place of worship for over 800 years. It was lovely inside with the east window above the altar depicting the coming of the Holy Spirit designed by a member of the congregation in 1987. The graveyard at the back housed bee hives and overlooked Lewes Castle.
Thought it worthy of todays blip.

Once settled in our apartment we decided to walk across the fields opposite to the next village to The Juggs, recommended in our booklet. The sun was setting and we had good views over the chalk of the South Downs as well as the castle above Lewes.  We didn’t get there as on reaching the road we realised there were no street lights or pavement for walking back so we returned. Nice to have a leg stretch after a long journey anyway.
