Life through my eyes

By Amanda_T

Live isn't black and white

The Colston statue was toppled in the year of the pandemic and Black Lives Matter protest. At the time I remember feeling quite emotionally affected by it. I realised I had walked past it and never thought that to others it represents slavery. Growing up just outside of Bristol it never occurred to me to question the Colston Hall, Colston Street etc. I also found it upsetting as to why Black Lives Matter was so necessary as every life is equal regardless of heritage. But also the lack of democracy. It had been suggested that a vote would be held as to whether the statue should be removed.

That aside today was the first time I have seen the empty plinth. I had to go into Bristol to collect something from the art shop and this was en route. It's the second time I've been there without Mr T and it's a real struggle. It feels too busy, too noisy and too overwhelming. It will be essential trips only.
