In these days of AI and satnavs and internet-connected cheesegraters it's a tad mystifying that the deceased apartment freezer still relies on a long thermal tube of something down the back of the unit causing this widget to expand/contract, to mechanically flip a switch, to control the temperature..
We'll it apparently should do, but no longer does for reasons unknown. A bit of hacking confirmed that the freezer itself was fine, just that the widget wasn't switching it on.
Also for reasons unknown, the manufacturer will sell you a replacement part - for half the cost of a new freezer.
Alternatively, one of the many faces of Screwfix* will let you have it for a quarter of the manufacturer's price.
I'm sure that makes sense to someone.
