Ffynnon Beuno Caves, Tremeirchion

FRIDAY

I spent most of the morning working in the garden and have now finished thinning out the lavender plants. I also did some repairs to the rendering of another section of retaining wall at the back of the house which I would like to paint before the winter weather sets in.

Today's blip is a photo of the Fynnon Beuno Caves which are just 500 metres away from home as the crow flies.

The two caves here are designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and also a Site of Special Scientific Interest. They were first excavated in 1883-5. Human tools have been found on the site dating back to around 36,000 BC, and a mammoth bone has been dated back to 16,000 BC.

The caves, which are on private land, also provide a winter roost for a colony of the lesser horseshoe bat.
