Dundas Harbour

We have sailed further east along Devon Island and taken the zodiacs ashore at Dundas Harbour. There are remains of settlements by Dorset and Thule peoples from thousands of years ago.

More recently the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had a station there to control the hunting. It’s the right hand hut in the main photo. I used my iPhone on night mode to get a glimpse inside through a chink in the boarding in the second extra. There is a sad little graveyard within a white picket fence further up the hillside with the graves of two young officers, one aged 27 and one 25.

More recently still, as I understand it, the Canadian government relocated some Inuit from Baffin Island in order to more securely claim Devon Island as Canadian territory The settlement didn’t last long.

The first extra shows the ice piled up on the harbour beach.
