OilMan's Flowers
The heat wave ended in a bank of fog this morning, which the sun has not succeeded in burning through. OilMan was feeling a bit sorry for himself. and I had a hard time waking up, so we sat around reading the "big" paper (the New York Times that comes on Sunday) and drinking coffee. I always said that Sunday is the day when no one is in charge....
The flowers which Dana picked from her garden and brought over for OilMan did a lot to brighten the day. She has a green thumb and an artistic eye, and insists that she doesn't want to grow vegetables, only flowers.
We spent the afternoon making minestrone with ingredients from our garden which included some savoy cabbage, purple, yellow and orange carrots, and a leek. These little bits of produce probably cost five times as much as buying them from the store, and a hundred times the effort, but they give OilMan a lot of satisfaction, especially when the cabbage actually forms a head. As the slight brightening of the afternoon gives way to a new onslaught of fog we will have some wine and our soup and look forward to a cozy evening....
