A time for everything

Starting to turn

Sunday
We had to be at church at 9am this morning, as I was playing handbells, and we were having a run through before service. Roger isn’t playing bells yet due to his impaired eye sight, but neither can he drive, so he had to come with me. We were playing a lovely arrangement of This is my Father’s World, together with organ. The choir start singing in service next week, and the congregation are eager for our return.
After the service we had Bible study as usual, then it was back home for a quick bite to eat, before going for a walk at Sharon Woods, where I took this photo of one of the trees beginning to turn into its autumn finery. They are supposed to start work on dredging the lake soon, and the path around the lake will be closed, but it was still open today.
At 4pm we attended an organ recital at Hyde Park United Methodist Church, which was well attended. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary of the organ series. Today’s organist was the very talented Paul Jacobs, heralded as “one of the major musicians of our time” by the New Yorker, and “America’s leading organ performer” by The Economist.
In 2003 Mr Jacobs joined the faculty of the Juilliard School in New York, and was named chairman of the organ department in 2004, one of the youngest appointments in the school’s history. He performed a wonderful recital, including Bach, César Frank and Felix -Alexandre Guilmant. The recital was followed as usual by a reception with cheese, crackers, fruit, cookies and punch.
