Hip

A normal Saturday morning.
I’m in Tesco and a random call comes in from a stranger to tell me my mum has been knocked down in Kelso, ambulance on its way.
Mad dash to meet the ambulance at BGH and a long painful seven hours in A & E who were fantastic.
Turns out an SUV went straight into her as she crossed the square knocking her onto the cobbles.
Suspect broken left hip, right arm and leg degloved. Horrendous and at 85 seeing her in agony with any movement of her leg was tough to witness. Totally immobile, flat on her back they gave her morphine which she warned didn’t agree with her, blood pressure dropped to 60/29 and into resuss.
What a day, my poor wee mum, all because of some guy’s inattention at the wheel. Apparently he didn’t see her despite her seeing it about to happen and helpless to avoid.
This changes everything, having lost my stepfather in Feb, she lives on her own, fiercely independent and still drives. She’s totally compos mentis so with a heavy heart we both speculated what the future now holds.
Finally got up to the ward and a sea change of compassion for the worst. Literally babaric treatment from an uncaring staff nurse who was telling her off for crying out in pain as they transferred her.
So vulnerable so painful. Hopefully operated tomorrow
how life can turn on a penny.
