inspiration all around us

Inspired by an old tombstone.

Kendal parish church, open for Heritage Open days was a hive of activity. There were toddlers playing noisily in the play area, handbell ringers playing hymn tunes, visits up the bell tower and informative notices everywhere. We read that this was the tomb of nine year old Walter Strickland who died in AD 1656. He was ‘most conspicuous in excellence’ and ‘of the most sweet conversation’. As the building is Victorian, it has obviously been moved from another venue- and one where vandals from a former time were able to carve their names all over him. Perhaps he was near a school playground.
