Storm in a teacup (Mystic to Falmouth)
Back blip for yesterday
We had spent at least a week listening to TV reports and reading in the press about impending Hurricane Lee. Even the weather forecasters said it was going to trash the eastern seaboard of the United States, Cape Cod would be devastated there would be terrible flooding and there would be power outages lasting days. We were more than a little concerned, especially as our last three nights were booked in a beachside apartment in Falmouth, MA.
After getting up we looked out of the window and there was a bit of movement in the trees, but no more than an average windy day. Likewise the ground was dry. We wondered if the hurricane had been over-exaggerated. But no the TV channel was still saying how terrible it was and how careful anyone stupid enough to venture out had to be.
We stayed put until 11:30, loaded the car and set off with a route mapped on the interstates on the basis that the main motorways were likely to be the safest place to be. The journey to Cap Cod was completely uneventful. We saw no flooding, no fallen trees, not even a branch or two.
After a mid-afternoon lunch we checked into our apartment and sat with a cup of tea. Late afternoon we took a walk along the almost deserted beach. Sure there was plenty of rolling surf and no one was actually in the water but everyone we talked to said that the Cape had hardly been touched by the storm. I guess it’s better to err on the side of caution but for local businesses a lost Saturday at the end of the season is probably costly.
As we walked the sun started to set and the sky lit up in the most wonderful shades of pink and purple and orange. The photographs hardly capture the brilliance of the changing hues. I am hoping for more of the same.
