Why no staff?

I had planned a quick trip to Westfield today but due to the vagaries of the Central Line , I spent longer travelling than I did shopping.
At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old woman, what is with all the self checkouts in shops these days? No staffed tills in either M&S or Boots……..
