Dragonflies dipping across the water

I felt they were jumping for joy, a last hurrah perhaps in these  late warm days? I’m not sure this is the ‘best’ photo,  but it best sums up the scene, 5 pairs of red dragonflies dipping across the water at YWT Staveley, I’ve never seen this before, can anyone tell me, are they laying as they dip in and out of the water?
