I'm really happy with the essential quality of the Pentax SL and my judgement of the exposures. It mostly came back to me; the basic 
learnt-by-rote fundamentals of looking at a scene and thinking what will be nominally correct. It did help that I used an app called Lghtmtr, because the  Pentax SL SLR camera, made in 1969 was the model before the Pentax Spotmatic. Which, as the name implies, had a built-in light meter. That was a big deal way back then. 
Given that I had to juggle a phone and a camera, it was easier to take a reading on the app, put it away and then proceed with an educated guess as to any subsequent exposures in the current lighting conditions. 
Using the actual camera is lovely, as it is so simple and has a satisfying mechanical feel.
