Samba Gown Sandra Suubi

Currently displayed in the centre of Open Eye Gallery, Sandra Suubi’s ‘Samba Gown’ is a statement of resistance. A procession in the Samba Gown is used as a metaphor for what happened when Uganda (bride) entered a binding contract with its former colonisers (groom). The work draws attention to the transactional relationship that exists between former colonies and their colonisers.
We visited the gallery last week and we were very moved by this artwork ....so I had to go down and see this procession today ...very surreal through the hot streets of Liverpool full of hen parties etc
