Inconceivable adventures of S Mouse VIII
A TALE TOLD BY THE NATIVE MICE.
long ago in the dawn of the world there was one great island, where mice and humans lived in harmony. then came cats, enslaving the humans, and the peace was destroyed. the mice formed a fellowship with the smaller birds, and using deep magic caused the sea to rise up, drowning many humans and cats, and sundering the island into many smaller islands separated by a shallow sea. in fear of the magic of the mice and smaller birds, the cats agreed that certain of these new islands would be reserved to the mice and smaller birds and neither cats nor their human slaves would venture there. in return the mice and smaller birds agreed that they would cause the sea to rise no further.
all was once more peace until, one terrible day, a vast monster of the sea arose in the west and came rushing towards the archipelago. a conference was called between the mice, the smaller birds and the cats. it was agreed to work a great magic. once the beast had come ravening into the shallow sea this magic was duly worked, with the necessary sacrifice of many humans: the beast was caused to cease from its ravening and fall into a deep sleep. yearly at the lowest tide the spell is renewed by the mice, the smaller birds and the cats, and so the beast lies sleeping in the shallows yet, never to wake again so long as the alliance lasts.
thus were the islands and the world preserved from the ravening of the great sea beast by the mice and smaller birds in a most unusual alliance with the cats.
