Memorial

A lazy day at long last; we weren’t moving on and the pool guy had finished his maintenance by 2pm, so obviously there was a bit of lounging there (in the shade). Inside the hotel earnest groups of workers broke out of conference rooms to hold huddle sessions. We glimpsed them from time to time as they went about their business.
At 5:30 I strolled off for a couple of beers at the Common Bond Brewery which is the only brewery in Montgomery and just round the corner from the hotel. Fancy that!
But the main part of the day was given over to visits to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and then the Legacy Museum. This after all, was the city which was the site of the Confederate White House, before being at the centre of so many events in the struggle for civil rights a century later.
The memorial is absolutely stunning - 800 six-foot monuments, one for each county where a lynching took place, with the names of the victims engraved on each one.
Enough said. It gave you a real sense of the scale of the terror and racial control and the bravery of those who eventually faced it down.
