Silbury Hill

Looking back to Bank Holiday Monday, we popped down the A4 from Marlborough to visit West Kennet Long Barrow and Silbury Hill which are either side of the main road. A passing maths teacher (!) told us that this is a conical frustrum and he uses it to talk to students about calculating volume. You learn something new every day!

Silbury Hill is a prehistoric artificial chalk mound, and is part of the Stonehenge, Avebury and Associated Sites UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the tallest prehistoric human-made mound in Europe and one of the largest in the world; similar in volume to contemporary Egyptian pyramids, being built in successive layers between c.2400–2300 BC.
