Quarries
The Arnside/Silverdale AONB has four major quarries. Over the past couple of hundred years vast quantities of limestone have been removed.
The biggest quarry at Sandside is still in operation and will continue for some years to come. I believe it provided a large part of the foundations for the M6 motorway.
Middlebarrow quarry was closed about twenty years ago and it is impossible to gain access.
The remaining two, Trowbarrow, as seen in this Blip and Warton have been turned into very successful Nature Reserves. They have Bee and Fly Orchids and Peregrine Falcons and much more.
