Inveraray

It was such a beautiful day after the mist cleared in the morning, and we took a wee run up to Inveraray.  Stopped at the top of the Rest and Be Thankful for a coffee and biscuit from the snack bar, along with about a million other people, and then had a lovely run along Loch Fyne to Inveraray.  Had a good walk around and came home via Helensburgh.  A great day with some wonderful scenery.  I tried a panorama shot to include the whole bay, and I always like the shot of the WW1 memorial.  

I was reading an article in the newspaper today about the situation in Orkney with cruise liners, which are causing a lot of controversy on the island.  It seems that if two large liners are calling at the same time, there can be about 7,000 people decanting onto Kirkwall, which about doubles the population.  

 I first visited Orkney as a backpacker nearly 40 years ago, sailing into the islands from Scrabster, and things were very different then.  We managed to see quite a lot by local buses, but on our last day we wanted to go to see the Italian Chapel.  Unfortunately it was a Sunday and there was no transport to get there.  However, one shop was open in Kirkwall, and the very kind shop owner arranged for us to hire bikes and we cycled there, which made it such a lovely experience.  Changed days, now that all the local sites seem to be mobbed with people.  I am glad I experienced the islands in a quieter era.
