Oh it’s such a perfect day…
Today turned into one of those days where you make a plan and hope that it comes to fruition then it ends up being beyond your wildest expectations :-)
The plan had been to nip along the road to Hushnish Beach, hoping to see some highland coos, then after lunch head to south Lewis for a tour of the beaches there, ending up with dinner at Uig Sands Restaurant. Simples :-)
After breakfast we headed to Hushnish (my favourite beach) and not only did we see highland coos, they posed for us and one even scratched its bum on the fence for our amusement! We also saw sheep sitting on a rock looking at us as if we’re nuts! Patricia and I are each going to have enough photos of sheep on rocks to fill a whole photo book!
Back to the cottage and after lunch we headed to south Lewis taking in (to name a few) Cliff Beach, Kneep beach, Reef beach, Uig Bay, Ardroil (where the Lewis chessmen we’re dug up in 1831) We then followed the coast road south to its very end taking in stunning cliff top scenery, a standing stone and temple to St Catan and Liddell Beach.
Between the Atlantic coast to our right and the south Lewis mountains to our left, our jaws were constantly dropping. Of course when we got to the end of the road we got to turn around and see it all from the opposite perspective on our way back to Uig Sands and dinner at the Uig Sands restaurant, which was absolutely superb and we thought would be the perfect end to our amazing day, but nope, we came out to be greeted by the absolutely stunning super blue moon that shone down on us all the way back to Harris, illuminating at least 20 deer at various points on the side of the road (and sometimes on the road!) about 100 sheep along the route, again often lying casually on the road.
And all of this accompanied by hours and hours of laughter. Great silliness and nonsense, not least when Patricia and I got our photo taken with the King chessman, thinking we looked cool in our shades and fancying ourselves as Thelma and Louise, when in reality we looked like Thelma and Louise’s grannies or Roy Orbiston groupies!!!
More shots in extras :-)
PS south Harris beaches get all the glory but south Lewis beaches are just as stunning. A well kept secret.
