Afternoon exploration trip
Today I went geocaching with a friend directly from the office. Our target was an Earth Cache at Valkeala. There isn't physical cache, but instead had to analyze and answer to tricky questions related to this rock formation and explain how it has been born before able to log the cache.
This dike in Valkeala looks a bit like it was built by humans, but actually it is a geological formation. A dike is any rock formation that has formed in a fracture in an already existing rock body. Because of this, there are two types of dikes. Dikes can be magmatic or sedimentary. Magmatic dikes form when magma intrudes into a crack, pushing other rocks out of the way, and then cools down and solidifies. Sedimentary dikes are formed when sediment fills a pre-existing crack.
