The last of the sunflowers
I went back to the sunflower field today, as a friend wanted to go. They close for visitors at the end of tomorrow - I knew they wouldn’t be as spectacular as when I first saw them. Most of the biggest flowers were over, but there were lots of smaller ones that had sprouted from the same stems as the big flowers.
It was grey and mizzly for most of the time, but I managed to catch a tiny glimmer of sunlight on this flower head. The field was on a big slope which meant that the flowering times were slightly staggered due to different amounts of sun reaching them. They have done well to survive lots of gales and torrential rain. It seems there's going to be a 'pumpkin field' on the same farm soon.
After a whole year, SW Water are going to lift the hosepipe ban. But not until September 25th - the chief water man said the tourists will have gone by then. It seems a bit unfair that locals who’ve suffered the ban since last October have to wait another month just because tourists are still here.
Petrol here has gone up by 9p a litre in just 10 days.
