Goosberry fool

We'd a fantastic crop of gooseberries last year - this year is not looking so rosy. One of our bushes has been decimated by caterpillars and will produce next to no fruit and our other bush is under quarantine.
The man at the garden centre says this is a common problem and suggests spraying them - bit late now I think.
